TBDAbout Chris LeDoux:
Chris LeDoux was an American country music singer, songwriter, and rodeo champion, celebrated for his authentic cowboy spirit, high-energy performances, and deep connection to the Western lifestyle. Born on October 2, 1948, in Biloxi, Mississippi, and raised in Wyoming, LeDoux lived the life he sang about competing as a professional rodeo cowboy before building a career as a beloved country artist.
Before signing with a major label, LeDoux gained a cult following by independently selling his music at rodeos and through mail orders, eventually recording over 20 albums on his own. His early songs, like “Bareback Jack” and “Cadillac Cowboy,” captured the raw grit and romance of the rodeo life, earning him the respect of fans who knew he was the real deal.
LeDoux’s music career took a national turn in the 1990s, when Garth Brooks—one of his biggest fans—referenced him in the hit song “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old).” This led to a record deal with Capitol Records and the release of several major-label albums, including Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy (1992), which featured the popular title track duet with Brooks. His music blended traditional country with rock influences, offering a rugged, genuine sound that celebrated the cowboy way of life.
Beyond music, LeDoux was also a world champion bareback rider, winning the 1976 PRCA World Championship—a rare accomplishment that lent even more authenticity to his artistry. He continued to tour and record until health issues forced him to slow down.
Chris LeDoux passed away on March 9, 2005, from complications related to cancer, but his legacy lives on through his music, his family, and the annual Chris LeDoux Days festival in Wyoming. In 2005, he was honored with the Academy of Country Music’s Pioneer Award, and a bronze statue titled Good Ride Cowboy stands in his memory in Kaycee, Wyoming.
A true cowboy in both life and music, Chris LeDoux remains a legendary figure who embodied the heart and soul of the American West.
