TBDAbout Emilio:
Emilio Navaira, professionally known as Emilio, was an American singer and songwriter whose career spanned Tejano, regional Mexican, and country music. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he became one of the most prominent figures in Tejano music during the late 1980s and 1990s, earning both Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards over the course of his career.
Emilio began his professional career in 1983 as the lead vocalist for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales. He later formed his own group, Grupo Rio, and signed with CBS/Columbia Records in 1989. During the early 1990s, he released a series of Tejano albums, including Sensaciones and Unsung Highways, which helped establish him as a leading artist within the genre.
In 1995, Emilio crossed over into country music with the English-language album Life Is Good. The album produced the single “It’s Not the End of the World,” which reached No. 27 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. While his country releases were brief, they expanded his audience and demonstrated his versatility across musical styles.
Throughout his career, Emilio returned to focus primarily on Tejano and regional Mexican music. His 2002 album Acuérdate won the Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album, and his 2007 release De Nuevo received the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album. Other notable songs include “Por Siempre Unidos” and “Qué Bonita,” which charted on Latin music charts and received extensive radio play.
Emilio toured extensively in the United States and Mexico, performing at festivals, concert halls, and special events. In March 2008, he was critically injured in a tour bus accident but recovered following medical treatment and rehabilitation. Emilio died on May 16, 2016, of a heart attack at the age of 53.
Emilio Navaira’s body of work includes significant contributions to Tejano and country music, marked by multiple award-winning albums, charting singles, and a career that bridged musical markets. His albums Life Is Good, Acuérdate, and De Nuevo remain among his most recognized recordings, and singles such as “It’s Not the End of the World” and “Por Siempre Unidos” continue to represent his musical legacy.
