About Hootie & the Blowfish:

Hootie & the Blowfish is an American rock band known for its melodic blend of pop rock, roots rock, and alternative rock, as well as its wide commercial appeal in the 1990s. The band was formed in 1986 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, by Darius Rucker (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mark Bryan (lead guitar), Dean Felber (bass), and Jim “Soni” Sonefeld (drums). Their name originated as a playful reference to two of the band members’ nicknames from college.

Hootie & the Blowfish achieved massive success with their 1994 debut album, Cracked Rear View, which became one of the best-selling albums of all time in the United States, propelled by hits such as “Hold My Hand,” “Let Her Cry,” and “Only Wanna Be with You.” The album’s warm, accessible sound, combining heartfelt lyrics with catchy melodies and Rucker’s soulful vocals, resonated with a wide audience and earned them both commercial and critical acclaim.

The band followed up with albums like Fairweather Johnson (1996) and Musical Chairs (1998), continuing to build a loyal fan base and touring extensively. Their music often blends themes of love, friendship, and personal reflection with a rootsy, approachable rock style, bridging pop sensibilities with Southern rock influences.

Hootie & the Blowfish have received numerous awards and accolades, including two Grammy Awards and multiple American Music Awards, and they are recognized for their contribution to the 1990s alternative and mainstream rock scenes. Beyond recording, the band is known for its charitable work, particularly through the Hootie & the Blowfish Foundation, which supports educational programs for children.

Despite periods of hiatus and solo projects—most notably Darius Rucker’s successful country career—the band continues to tour and record together. Hootie & the Blowfish remain celebrated for their catchy, heartfelt songs and for creating some of the defining rock anthems of the 1990s.
