Joe Stampley is an American country music singer known for his soulful vocals, chart-topping hits, and dynamic presence that made him one of the most recognizable voices of the 1970s and 1980s. Born on June 6, 1943, in Springhill, Louisiana, Stampley began his musical journey as the lead singer of the rock ’n’ roll group The Uniques, scoring hits in the 1960s before transitioning into a highly successful country career.
Stampley hit his stride in the 1970s with a string of major country hits, including “Soul Song,” “Too Far Gone,” “Roll On Big Mama,” and “If You Touch Me (You’ve Got to Love Me).” His smooth, blues-tinged style set him apart from his contemporaries, earning him multiple Top 10 singles and a reputation as one of the decade’s most versatile and charismatic performers.
In the 1980s, Stampley teamed up with fellow country star Moe Bandy to form the popular duo Moe & Joe, delivering a series of humorous, good-time hits such as “Just Good Ol’ Boys,” “Where’s the Dress,” and “Hey Joe (Hey Moe).” Their chemistry, humor, and classic country spirit made them fan favorites and brought Stampley a whole new wave of success.
